Understanding Investment Returns

Total Return

Total return includes both capital appreciation (change in value) and income (dividends, interest). It's the complete picture of your investment's performance.

Total Return = (Final Value - Initial Investment + Dividends) / Initial Investment × 100

CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate)

CAGR smooths out returns to show a constant annual rate that would produce the same final result. It's useful for comparing investments of different time periods.

CAGR = (Final Value / Initial Value)1/years - 1

Why CAGR Matters

A 50% return over 5 years is very different from 50% over 1 year. CAGR allows you to compare these investments fairly. The 5-year investment has a CAGR of about 8.4%, while the 1-year investment has a CAGR of 50%.
